#38 - Feature Story

Hey blog!

It's time to show you my feature story! It's called "Fashion in Young Womanhood". Read it below!

If there’s one thing Faisha Guerrier believes, it’s that anyone can be a fashionista. Fashion can be fun, it can be unique to every person, and Guerrier won’t stop exploring what that looks like for her.

Faisha Guerrier is the standard Gen-Z young adult – chasing dreams and passions no matter how big. As a sophomore at Barry University, she’s working hard to earn the degree she needs to become a registered nurse. However, when she isn’t busy studying medical terms, Guerrier devotes time to one of her main interests – fashion.

In Miami, Guerrier’s hometown, high fashion is everywhere. Models, celebrities, and influencers are constantly changing the trends and wearing all the hottest brands. Many people find themselves getting swept up in the drama of it all, constantly feeling the need to compare themselves to the rich and the famous. After all, the lifestyles of Miami elites are all over social media. Guerrier doesn’t feel that way, though.

For her, fashion is whatever she wants it to be. Right now, that’s a blend of stylish looks that are versatile and comfortable. “I love the simple look of pairing sneakers with a cute crop top and a nice purse,” said Guerrier. Crop tops, a staple in her casual looks, are very popular with younger women today. They offer both the comfort she loves and the opportunity to show off her sense of modern style. Guerrier still understands, however, the need to tailor looks to the occasion. At school, she makes sure to dress modestly, ensuring that she leaves a good impression on all those she crosses paths with. “You never know who you will meet”, said Guerrier. In more formal settings, she starts playing with high fashion, but still keeping her modest, youthful touch.

Guerrier’s style isn’t all her own doing. She draws inspiration from all kinds of sources, including her older sisters and celebrities like Zendaya and Rihanna. Her older sister, Jiena, is the former owner of an online clothing store, and it helped Guerrier learn what was trending and what wasn’t. As for her celebrity inspirations, Guerrier has quite the reverence for them. Zendaya’s “free spirited but laid back” fashion sense, paired with her natural elegance, enthuses Guerrier to both dress and carry herself in a way that is inspirational to those around her. “For Rihanna, she switches her style from sporty to classy; she just has a natural vibe and rocks it vibrantly”, said Guerrier.

The fashion world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows to Guerrier, though. The things trending today can sometime go against Guerrier’s principles. “There’s a lot of impurity”, she said. “I think a lot of [girls] feel like they have to be showing their butt or their body to be considered appealing or beautiful, but that’s not true at all”. Guerrier envisions a world where people can dress the way they feel without having to conform to the demands of the industry, whether it be provocativeness or discomfort. Also, with the rise of fast fashion, Guerrier is fearful of the impacts a passion for fashion may have on the environment. One day, she says, she hopes that “there’s a way to have fast fashion and a good environment.” In her eyes, fashion doesn’t have to hurt the world.
